Guided tour of Bordeaux historical centre

Bordeaux has been famous for its wine throughout the world for about 2000 years, but wine is not the only interesting thing about Bordeaux !

Indeed, the harbour and city centre of Bordeaux ("Bordeaux, Port of the Moon") have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007 : "The Port of the Moon, port city of Bordeaux in south-west France, is inscribed as an inhabited historic city, an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble, created in the age of the Enlightenment, whose values continued up to the first half of the 20th century, with more protected buildings than any other French city except Paris. It is also recognized for its historic role as a place of exchange of cultural values over more than 2,000 years, particularly since the 12th century due to commercial links with Britain and the Low Lands. Urban plans and architectural ensembles of the early 18th century onwards place the city as an outstanding example of innovative classical and neoclassical trends and give it an exceptional urban and architectural unity and coherence. Its urban form represents the success of philosophers who wanted to make towns into melting pots of humanism, universality and culture." unesco.org The city has recently been chosen as "Best European Destination 2015".

Bordeaux is also a very lively and lovely city : it has been chosen as "favorite French city of the French people" in 2015, thanks to its way of life and its numerous cafés and lovely historical squares !

TOUR N°2 : TOUR OF BORDEAUX WITH A BUS :

During this guided tour in your own bus, I will explain the history of Bordeaux, including the wine production and trade, the "English" period (1152-1453), the triangular trade, the urbanism of the age of the Enlightenment, and I will show you the main historical buildings of the city, such as Place de la Bourse and the 18th century façades facing the Garonne river, Porte Cailhau, Saint-André cathedral (which can be only seen from far away with the bus), Rohan Palace (current city hall, former archbishop palace), Grand-Théâtre, and more recent ones, such as the recently renovated quays and the Miroir d'Eau (reflecting pool). The bus enables us to see more of the city than on foot. The tour thus includes, beside the city centre, the north district "Les Chartrons" and the district "La Bastide" on the right bank of the river. It ends with a 20-30 min walk to approach the Theatre and Notre-Dame church.

Practical information :

* Length : 2h

* Price : 138€ (179€ after 9 pm)

* Starting point : Quinconces square bus park / bus stop on allées de Tourny, in front of the shop "L'Intendant"

My advice after the tour :

Why not climb to the Pey-Berland Tower and have a panoramic view of the city !
